🐝 Life Skill of the Month:
Order Your Own Meal!
This month's challenge: Next time your family goes out to eat, let your Honey Bee order completely for herself!
Before the server arrives, have her decide what she wants and practice saying it clearly. When it's time to order, encourage her to:
👀 Look at the server when speaking. 🗣️ Speak loudly and clearly enough to be heard. 🍔 Say exactly what she'd like, including sides or modifications. 🥤 Order her own drink. 💛 Use please and thank you. ❓ Answer the server's questions herself when she can. 🌟 BONUS: Ask the server a question herself if she needs something later!
For example, instead of Mom saying, “She'll have the cheeseburger with fries and a lemonade,” your Honey Bee takes the lead: “May I please have the cheeseburger with fries and a lemonade? Thank you!”
🍯 Why we're practicing it
Ordering a meal is a small opportunity to practice some big life skills: speaking confidently to adults, making decisions, advocating for yourself, using good manners, and becoming more independent.
🐝 Parent Tip: Try not to jump in right away if she gets nervous, forgets something, or the server asks a question she wasn't expecting. Give her a few seconds to figure it out. That's part of the challenge!
